Anno Scholten of Connexx Energy is a transplanted Aussie now based in Dallas. (He talks with an accent that sounds like Crocodile Dundee tinged with True Grit.) He is an expert at tying building systems into automated programs such as demand response. He consults to many leading firms (Constellation Energy, Hunt Energy, etc.), often acting as an extension of the development group.
But Anno says three major issues must be solved before the smart grid + smart buildings market takes off. However, only the first one is getting much attention in the press.
1. Connect the technology pieces (hardware, software, network) necessary to pull energy data from buildings and pass it to the grid systems.
2. String the technologies together to create a full menu. The vendors are currently offering point solutions – demand response, energy analytics, energy efficiency, carbon accounting, lighting control, etc. But what building owners want is a single integrated dashboard that lets them choose from a portfolio of options, says Anno. Vendors will have to build, buy or partner to get all the pieces.
