Honeywell says that while adequate energy supplies are generally not a concern, the amount of electricity needed to support peak demand is growing quickly – and stretching network capacity to its limits and creating the risk of outages in the future.
SSE plans to come up with a long-term strategy based on the pilot. Its initial deployment will have support from the Low Carbon Network Fund, established by British regulator Ofgem to encourage development of energy conservation technologies and smart grid solutions.
While Honeywell will provide and implement the Auto DR technology, the company also will offer consulting and engineering services for customers to help them come up with load shedding strategies and find ways to temporarily reduce energy use with little impact on their operations.
Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions, commented "We were the first to apply Auto DR in Asia and North America. And the pilot with SSE will help prove that it's portable and flexible enough to meet the challenges of utilities around the world. Reducing peak demand and increasing efficiency are some of the greenest and cleanest options when it comes to energy."
