Solar on the Cheap? A Massachusetts Firm Says Maybe So

1366 Technologies says it's working on a shorter, waste-free silicon solar cell making process that could cut production costs by 80%. You can read more about it in this piece from the MIT Technology Review.

.

While this new molten silicon technology sounds as if it's still in its infancy, it also sounds promising. 1366 plans to break ground for a large-scale production plant later in the year, with a little help from a $4 million
Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy Smart Grid stimulus grant and $5 million in private support.

Significantly cheaper solar technology would, of course, help make it more competitive with fossil fuels.
