Solar on the Cheap? A Massachusetts Firm Says Maybe So

1366 Technologies says it's working on a shorter, waste-free silicon solar cell making process that could cut production costs by 80%. You can read more about it in this piece from the MIT Technology Review.

While this new molten silicon technology sounds as if it's still in its infancy, it also sounds promising. 1366 plans to break ground for a large-scale production plant later in the year, with a little help from a $4 million Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy Smart Grid stimulus grant and $5 million in private support.

Significantly cheaper solar technology would, of course, help make it more competitive with fossil fuels.
