. Solar's busting out everywhere. You can charge your EV, your electric bike and most of your personal electronics at Portland, Oregon's first public solar canopy charging station. Located in a parking lot at the city's Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, the station is a joint effort by Sanyo Solar of Oregon, which made the solar panels, InSpec Group, Portland General Electric and the museum. And North Carolina's EEPro is opening up a new source for solar power generation: commercial carports. The company says that while many companies want to go green, building design limitations can make rooftop solar installations impractical. But the carport roofs, EEPro says, are ideal locations for photovoltaic installations which can power housing complexes, businesses, malls, amusement parks and more. In addition to providing power, the carport installations help save on electricity costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
Quick Take: This is the kind of innovation that's being sparked as the Smart Grid and renewable energy strategies come of age. What's next?
