Smart Grid Renewables Standard and New Transmission Grid on Governors’ Short List

If the country is truly going to take advantage of wind energy, President Obama and Congress need to support a national renewable electricity standard and the creation of a new interstate transmission grid. That's the call from the Governors' Wind Energy Coalition, a bipartisan organization of 29 state governors. The group says its recommendations will meet the expectations Americans have for their energy future. Read about the coalition's renewables and transmission plan.

Quick Take: Wind as a clean source of renewable energy has taken off — so much so that in some parts of the country many suspect the existing transmission grid can't handle it all. In that respect, the governors are right. But for now, the transmission system is a tangled and fragmented mass of conflicting interests, jurisdictions and regulation. While some would argue it might make sense to untangle the transmission mess we've got before we can overhaul it, there's something to say for some 'clean slate' thinking. If we could start from scratch, what would we do?
