The Department of Energy (DOE), the Department of Interior (DOI) and the Army Corps of Engineers will work more closely together to advance environmentally sustainable hydropower. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the agencies says they will collaborate to make electricity generation at federally-owned facilities more efficient and productive, and develop new low-impact hydropower technologies. Sustainable renewable energy is a cornerstone of both the Smart Grid and U.S. energy policy.
Quick Take: Interior's Bureau of Reclamation and the Army Corps of Engineers own roughly half of the country's hydropower capacity, so it makes sense for DOE to join the party and coordinate its low-impact hydropower R&D work with the agencies that run federal water projects — particularly when competition for water resources is growing.
