Solar roadways? Seriously? When we first featured the Idaho electrical engineer building a prototype for solar road panels back in 2009, it struck us as an interesting idea if maybe a bit far-fetched. But Scott Brusaw had determination, and a $100,000 small business grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
When we revisited the story in April 2010, the prototype was complete and Scott and Julie Brusaw were looking for more money to take it the next step. We did a Quick Poll at the time, asking readers to weigh in on the concept of solar highways. A majority of those who voted said they thought the idea was promising indeed.
Fast forward a few more months to October 2010 when Solar Roadways was a winner in GE's Ecomagination Challenge – receiving the highest number of community votes and a $50,000 award.
And now here's the latest: In July the Brusaws were awarded a $750,000 phase 2 contract from the Federal Highway Administration.
So maybe solar highways aren't so far-fetched ... and perhaps someday solar trees will be sprouting alongside them. Let us know what you think; use the Talk Back form below to add your comments.
