Utilities Telecom Council (UTC), a global telecom trade group and communications giant Verizon will conduct a joint study of the critical communications and IT needs of utilities as the Smart Grid unfolds. A study report will detail how utilities and the telecom industry should approach critical infrastructure communications. Utilities will need partners to succeed in meeting the communications challenges the Smart Grid presents, said William R. Moroney, UTC CEO and president. "To be successful, utilities and their technology partners will need to have a common understanding of the technological, operational and financial factors that are the foundations for all the communications needs of utilities."
Quick Take: Communications infrastructure is a huge issue, and this brain trust has bitten off a healthy challenge. But UTC and Verizon won't be messing around. The study report is due to be completed in September.
