Smart Grid Cheers and Broadcast Boos Greet FCC Broadband Plan

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released its long-awaited National Broadband Plan, the agency's blueprint for providing safe and affordable broadband service for all Americans over the next 10 years. While lauded as an accelerant for the Smart Grid, broadcasters have already criticized one primary component of the plan that would detour airwaves from TV stations to broadband.

Quick Take: It's a big, ambitious plan — 360 pages with lots of proposals and recommendations. That alone means, as one telecommunications lobbyist rightly said, there's no way to avoid making someone mad. But reliable, secure broadband communications will be important to the success of the Smart Grid's role in achieving the country's energy goals.
