The networking giant announced the first offerings in its Connected Grid portfolio of Cisco Smart Grid communications solutions. The purpose-built rugged routers and switches are intended to help utilities deliver power more reliably and efficiently and to create an extremely secure and manageable network solution for substations to integrate IP-based communications with the electric grid for intelligent grid monitoring and control. Additional benefits include the ability to collect and analyze data in near real-time from intelligent electronic equipment in the substation to better manage and maintain transmission and distribution equipment, identify and automatically repair faults, better integrate renewables into the grid and more.
Quick Take: Successful substation automation is an important part of the overall effort to implement a more efficient, secure, manageable and self-monitoring and self-healing electric grid — and Cisco Smart Grid communications technologies appear ready to play a significant role.
