In his recent article on the TVA and SmartSynch Jesse suggested that cellular is on its way to becoming an important contender in the Smart Grid communications arena. Here's another example of the communications smackdown on the way.
CURRENT Group and Verizon have teamed up to provide utilities with a way to more quickly implement the capabilities of the Smart Grid by coupling CURRENT's intelligent distributed sensing with an IP-based solution from communications giant Verizon.
The new agreement between the two companies means they will be able to make available real-time power consumption and analysis communications between electric utilities and the sensors deployed on their networks.
Verizon will bring the underlying wireless and IP network services, managed network and security services and advanced IT security consulting services to help utilities find and mitigate risks to their critical cyber assets which includes data, applications, IT systems and networks.
CURRENT will contribute its intelligent sensors to monitor distribution grid performance, its OpenGridTM utility element management system and its System Optimization and Reliability analytical software solutions.
CURRENT CEO Tom Casey said, "Integrated distribution Smart Grid technologies like that of CURRENT and Verizon provide utilities with low investment solutions that are easy to deploy and deliver fast, measurable results."
