Arch Rock Claims First AMI and Grid Communications Platform Based Entirely on Open Standards By SGN Staff Jun 7, 2010 - 1:43:57 PM
Arch Rock Corporation says it has developed the first AMI and grid communications platform based entirely on industry-standard IP networking, security and data collection protocols. The PhyNet-Grid's standard interfaces allow it to work with smart meters from all vendors and distribution network devices. Arch Rock CEO Roland Acra said utilities have until now been limited to either closed, proprietary RF mesh or power line communication-based systems, or IP-based but incredibly expensive systems that relied on public wireless networks "that required putting a cell phone in every meter or building an even costlier new, dedicated WiMAX infrastructure."
Quick Take: This development and other similar moves of late reflect the huge push for interoperability in the Smart Grid and the rush by both government and industry groups to develop practical, long-term standards for innovative grid technologies.
