Top 2 smart meter projects …
In the third installment of its Smart Meter Uprising report, market research firm Zpryme crowns CenterPoint Energy and Florida Power & Light as the top two Smart Grid Investment Grant (SGIG) projects based on number of smart meters. “Back in 2009 the overall purpose of the SGIG was to accelerate the modernization of the U.S. electric transmission and distribution systems and promote investments in smart grid and related technology tentacles. Fast forward to September 2011 and utilities across the nation are finally starting to burst out of the smart grid starting blocks," suggests Jason S. Rodriguez, CEO and Director of Research for Zpryme. Other findings of interest: Combined, the top 10 SGIG projects have spent $1.12 billion to date on their smart grid programs. Smart meters and communications networks and IT systems account for 77% and 22% of total spending, respectively. A small fraction of the total has been spent on customer systems (0.5%). Today's MDM leaders are …
Pike Research says the two vendors best-positioned to win the meter data management (MDM) race are Oracle and eMeter. The Colorado research firm used a 12-criteria rating system to arrive at that conclusion. “Market approaches to MDM range from minimalist to full-feature,” says senior analyst Bob Lockhart. “Minimalist solutions are those where the MDM vendor simply captures data and provides a system of record for other application vendors to use. Full-featured MDM solutions, on the other hand, include a wide range of applications under a single umbrella. Meanwhile, the competitive landscape is changing due to acquisitions such as Toshiba’s purchase of Landis+Gyr and Schneider Electric’s acquisition of Telvent.” Find out who else made the winners' circle >>
