SELECT ENERGY PROJECTS

State Energy Program

Funds allocated to CT: $38,542,000

  • The State Energy Program (SEP) was developed to support energy efficiency and renewable technologies. DOE has developed four broad goals for SEP funds to meet:  increase efficiency and reduce energy costs for consumers, businesses and government; reduce reliance on imported energy;  improve the reliability of electricity and fuel supply and delivery of energy services; and reduce the impact of energy production and use on the environment.

Renewable Energy Programs - $20 million

Energy Efficiency / Conservation - $17.5 million

Training and Administrative Support - $1.042 million

Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) State Program

Funds allocated to CT: $1,730,000

  • This program provides funds for clean diesel projects that maximize job creation and preservation through the implementation of verified and/or certified retrofit technologies and EPA verified idle reduction technologies. States may also elect to include emerging diesel emission reduction technologies in their grant and loan programs.

Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grants

Allocated state funds: $24,522,900

  • Nearly $15 million in stimulus funds has been directly awarded to 26 of the state’s largest municipalities.  The state’s share, $9,593,500, has not been committed to projects yet.  Under the Governor’s plan, every town is eligible for at least $25,000 plus an amount determined by population.  Of the $9.5 million, the state will distribute 90 percent of that as block grants and provide the remaining 10 percent as a “bonus pool” for those towns that choose to participate in regional energy efficiency and conservation projects. The funding will support energy audits, retrofits, transportation programs that conserve energy, greenhouse gas reduction, development of energy efficient building codes and geothermal building systems.  Towns will be required to apply for the funds, outlining the projects they wish to undertake, and must spend or fully commit the funds within two years of the grant award.
