SELECT ENERGY PROJECTS

.

State Energy Program

Alaska allocation: $28,232,000

  • Governor Sarah Palin vetoed the $28.2 million in federal “stimulus” funds because it requires adoption of building codes by municipalities.  Legislative leaders are poised to override Gov. Sarah Palin's veto.  Alaska is the only state to have rejected these funds.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants

Alaska allocation: $13,900,000

  • Of the total, $4.3 million are direct grants to municipalities, $9.6 million to the state energy office (AHFC).  The funds are provided for energy efficiency and conservation activities for communities, including but not limited to: developing/implementing an energy efficiency and conservation strategy; retaining technical consultant services to assist in the development of such a strategy; conducting residential and commercial building energy audits; establishing financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements (e.g., loan programs, rebate programs, waive permit fees); providing grants to nonprofit organizations to perform energy efficiency retrofits; developing and implementing programs to conserve energy used in transportation; developing and implementing building codes and inspection services to promote building energy efficiency; implementing energy distribution technologies, etc.
