Now if we only knew the “What.” President Obama today announced awards totaling slightly over $3.4 billion for 100 Smart Grid projects. That means about 75% of the applications received by DOE were turned down. What do we get for $3.4 billion? About 18 million smart meters deployed around the country, 700 automated substations and some 200,000 advanced transformers. But we still don’t know which technologies and standards will be used – and that is what will determine whether taxpayers get their money’s worth. |
