Finally! Smart Grid Stimulus Money Starts to Flow ... But There are Still Hiccups

Glendale, California, became the first city in the country to receive Smart Grid stimulus money after signing an investment grant contract with DOE Thursday. The $20 million grant will help pay for Glendale Water & Power's wide-ranging AMI-Smart Grid initiative that will include smart meters, demand response, thermal energy storage and more. Get the details here.

.

Woo hoo ... it's about time ... and all of that.

.

But get this: Four US senators, all Democrats, want the Obama administration to suspend awarding grants for the renewable energy segment of the stimulus program until requirements are adopted to require that projects use primarily American products and labor. Read about it here.

We thought it was bad enough that the stimulus tax issue threatens to delay or derail Smart Grid stimulus projects (and we've seen reports indicating we might see a decision on that issue within a couple of weeks). But now a group of senators wants to hold up the works for a 'Buy American' rule.

.

We're all for buying American certainly and recall a lot of language to that effect in requirements docs the DOE put out. Seems like these senators are just a tad late to the party.
