The Department of Energy announced that $51 million in Recovery Act funds will go to Alaska, Guam, and New Jersey through its State Energy Program (SEP). The $51 million represents 50% of the total the states will receive. The balance will be provided when the states have complied with reporting, oversight and accountability requirements mandated by the Recovery Act. Alaska will focus its resources on energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in the state's numerous rural communities. Guam will concentrate on public building energy audits and energy efficiency retrofits, policy leadership, and public education. A key feature of New Jersey's program will be implementation of financial incentive programs for residential solar, energy efficiency, and multi-family energy efficiency improvements. Quick Take: The state-level grant awards are a significant element of the stimulus program because they acknowledge that each state has its own distinct needs and challenges — and the knowledge and background to deal with them.
