.

A new GTM Research report identifies 10 states that are emerging as key Smart Grid policy leaders. The states cited in United States Smart Grid Policy 2010: In-Depth Analysis of Ten Key States Driving Deployment, lead in stimulus funding but other ways as well, according to the author. “These 10 states are the laboratories for U.S. smart-grid policy, and their influence on the pace and scope of deployment is durable and growing,” said Stephen Munro, the report’s author and an energy policy analyst with GTM Research. “Smart grid technology players will look to current state regulations for near-term activity as well as to anticipate how smart grid initiatives will adapt on a broader scale.”

The 10 states identified in the report are: California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Quick take: It’s true that the states that got the big bucks from the feds will be pioneering policies as well as technologies. But it’s also going to be instructive to watch some of the regions that did not get stimulus money; if they can find ways to make the Smart Grid happen on their own they’ll be the real heroes.
