DOE to Award $60 Million for Local Energy Efficiency and Renewables Programs By SGN Staff Jun 15, 2010 - 2:37:31 PM
The Energy Department has selected 20 local governments, nonprofits and quasi-governmental organizations to receive a total of $60 million for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. The grants, administered by DOE's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, range in size from $1 million to $5 million. The grants specifically support home and business energy efficiency retrofits and financing programs for energy efficiency improvements, energy-conserving transportation programs such as trip reduction strategies and alternative transportation, recycling, water efficiency and conservation, energy efficient street lighting and deployment of renewable energy systems. The award selections were based on a competitive review process.
Quick Take: Awarding grants at the local level is good Smart Grid strategy because it promotes civic involvement, not to mention a better understanding of what it is and what it does. The Smart Grid initiative is a lot more real if you can see it taking shape in your own backyard.
