American superconductor selects cable subcontractors for Tres Amigas SuperStation
Description
American Superconductor Corporation, a global power technologies company, today announced that Korea’s LS Cable Ltd. and France’s Nexans have been selected as the superconductor power cable subcontractors for the Tres Amigas SuperStation. This first-of-its-kind power transmission hub will be located in Clovis, New Mexico and is expected to link America’s three primary electric transmission grids – the Eastern (Southwest Power Pool), Western (Western Electricity Coordinating Council) and Texas (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) interconnections. LS Cable and Nexans will both manufacture superconductor power cables utilizing Amperium wire – AMSC’s proprietary second generation (2G) high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire.

 THE TUESDAY TOPIC

If you could design your own smart grid demo, what would it look like?

Three new demonstration projects caught our attention - a smart grid effort in Albuquerque's business district, a rapid recovery transformer study in Texas and a trial involving low voltage current sensor technologies in the UK. They also got us to thinking: At this stage in the smart grid build out, if you could design a demonstration project, what would it entail? That's our latest Tuesday Topic; click for the details.
