The Smart Grid got a $3 million jumpstart from GE this week in its 30-second Super Bowl ad.  The ad, which borrows a song and character from the Wizard of Oz, pokes fun at the grid’s lack of a “brain”.  The promo kicks off GE’s “NOW” advertising campaign, highlighting “innovation you don’t have to wait for”.  The campaign places special emphasis on the Smart Grid as one area that is especially deployable and offers great benefits.

My Take: Obviously, this ad is well timed to take advantage of the discussion of the stimulus package that is being debated in congress right now.  $3 million may sound like a lot, but this is clearly only the beginning in an outreach effort to utilities, legislators, and the public.  Kudos to GE for taking the business opportunities in this industry seriously.
