From Guam to India to New Zealand - and from Florida to California and points in between - the smart grid build-out has definitely not run out of steam if our weekly list of smart grid project wins is any indication (and we think it is).  Look below and on page 2 to see who's been tapped for metering projects, transmission work, efficiency programs, solar R&D – and much more.

 

PROJECT WINS

 

·         Guam Power Authority gives it up for Landis+Gyr.  The electric power providers for the U.S. Territory of Guam will use L+G's Gridstream RF advanced metering solution for its smart grid project, which will include deployment of 52,000 advanced meters and Gridstream networking components over the next two years. ·         New Zealand smart grid project goes to Silver Spring Networks. SSN’s standards-based IPv6 networking solution will be deployed across the entirety of Unison’s service territory. The utility's smart grid rollout is designed to improve grid reliability and service and enhance power grid asset management. Press release >>

 

·         Nexant gets the nod to lead clean energy project in India. The company's team of Indian and U.S. clean energy experts will work with U.S. Agency for International Development and Government of India counterparts to scale up and deploy innovative energy efficiency and smart grid technologies and practices. ·         EnerNOC goes to the head of the class at Northern Illinois U. The DeKalb school will use EnerNOC's EfficiencySMART solution to improve energy use at residence halls on campus. In the retro-commissioning project, EnerNOC will identify and address energy efficiency measures. Press release >>

Panama City, Florida getting a smarter water network with Sensus. The city is upgrading its water distribution system to incorporate the SensusAquaSense solution, which includes the company's FlexNet communications network. The city will also replace nearly 25,000 existing water meters with zero-lead Sensus residential and commercial meters. Press release >>

 

·         ABB wins a $60 million HVDC order from AEP to improve grid reliability in Texas. The project involves replacing a 30-year-old high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station to enable efficient power exchange, improve grid reliability and facilitate power flow control. Meanwhile, Tropos Networks, recently acquired by ABB, was selected by Kansas City Power & Light to supply a wireless communication network with advanced distribution automation features for KCP&L’s SmartGrid Demonstration Program. Press release pdf >>

  ·    Southern California Edison taps Quanta Services for transmission and substation work. Quanta's PAR division will install transmission infrastructure for SCE's Eldorado-Ivanpah Transmission Project and will also construct SCE's Red Bluff Substation Project near the town of Desert Center in eastern Riverside County, Calif. ·         Fort Collins Utilities will plot its next-gen smart grid with help from Excergy. The utility chose the consulting and systems integration firm to provide program management and technical consulting to complete its Advanced Meter Fort Collins project and prepare the city for the next generation of smart grid technologies. Strong Smart Grid

Agreed. We are still seeing high interest in various countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, and in Asia Pacific. In fact, it makes more sense to pursue smart grid investment as a viable option now, in order to more effectively manage eventual load growth and increased connectivity of distributed renewable energy sources.
