PROJECT WINS

.

·         ABB won a $55 million wind power order from Brazilian utility Eolicas do Sul. ABB will build three new substations to integrate wind energy and boost power supplies to meet Brazil's growing industrial, commercial and residential demand. More >>

·         Ventyx inked a $7 million deal with Eskom, Africa's largest electricity supplier. The South African utility will undertake the largest implementation in Africa of Ventyx’s SCADA/DMS for real-time network monitoring and control of electric power operations. More >>

·         Survalent Technology based in Ontario, Canada has added a couple more SCADA commissions in the U.S., one for Wiregrass Electric Cooperative in Alabama and another for St. James Municipal Utilities in Missouri. Survalent was also recently chosen to supply its SCADA system for an electricity supplier serving 852 villages in Vietnam. More >>

·         EnerNex Smart Grid Labs was awarded a contract by DOE's Oak Ridge National Lab to validate the smart meter test framework developed by the NIST to ensure remote smart meter firmware upgrade schemes implemented are truly interoperable with the NEMA standard. More >>

·         Sensus FlexNet utility network gets the nod from Southern Rivers Energy, a member-owned electric distribution cooperative in Barnesville, GA. The Sensus network will be the nucleus of a major technology update to serve the cooperative’s approximately 15,000 members. More >>

·         Itron has been selected by FortisBC Inc., a British Columbia-based energy services provider, to support its AMI project which includes 115,000 of Liberty Lake, WA-based Itron's advanced meters as well as its MDM and data presentment software. More >>

·         Landis+Gyr was chosen by Dawson Public Power District to deploy its Gridstream advanced meters to all of the PPD's residential and commercial accounts. Based in Lexington, NE, Dawson PPD is one of the largest rural electric systems in the state of Nebraska, serving about 23,000 electric meters. More >>

FINANCING WINS

.

·         A123 Systems, the EV battery and storage system maker we told you last

month was facing serious financial woes, looks like it has found a helping hand in China. SustainableBusiness.com says the Waltham, MA company could receive $450 million from Wanxiang Group Corp., an automotive components supplier. More >>

·         GridPoint, the Arlington, VA-based company that made our smart grid losers list in 2010 has raised $23 million in equity and options, according to a report by GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher. More >>

 

REGULATORY WINS

.

·         National Grid's smart grid pilot involving 15,000 electricity customers got the green light from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities last week.

The two-year pilot will test the ability of new technologies to reduce customer outages, save customers money by improving the operational efficiency of the grid, and fully integrate renewable energy and electric vehicles into the grid. More >>

Where are the medals?

I hate to say choose favorites, but if we are embracing the spirit of the Olympics, to me it would make sense to have a Gold, Silver, and Bronze category for some of these. I know they are all great, but I would be more interested to know which ones you think are really going to make a difference.
