SELECT ENERGY PROJECTS
State Energy Program
Total allotted statewide funds: $40,546,000.00
Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Iowa Energy Office will receive approximately $40.5 million for its State Energy Program (SEP). The overarching goal of the SEP funding is to help reduce per capita energy consumption by at least 25% of a state's 1990 per capita energy use by 2012. All projects submitted to receive funding through the State Energy Program must utilize current technology. Any early commercialization, research, or development projects should apply for funding through the Iowa Power Fund.

Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grants
State allocation: $9,593,500

- This program seeks to assist state and local governments in implementing strategies to reduce fossil fuel emissions, to reduce total energy use, and to improve energy efficiency.
Local energy efficiency improvements
Amount allotted to Iowa: $21,103,000
- The funding will support energy audits and energy efficiency retrofits in residential and commercial buildings, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements. Other activities eligible for use of grant funds include transportation programs that conserve energy, projects to reduce and capture methane and other greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, renewable energy installations on government buildings, energy efficient traffic signals and street lights, deployment of Combined Heat and Power and district heating and cooling systems, and others. Funding is based on a formula that accounts for population and energy use.
