Energy consulting and testing and certification firm DNV/KEMA Energy & Sustainability, which is leading the project, says it is the "first real-life smart grid community in the world and having delivered the world's first results from a total-concept smart grid deployment project, PowerMatching City is playing an important role in the development of smart grids and the transition towards a sustainable energy system."
As a result of its initial success, the project will continue in expanded form. A follow-up phase is concentrating on the effects of expansion (from 25 to about 70 households), consumer involvement through an interactive interface and other aspects.
Frits Bliek, PowerMatching City program coordinator, said "With the share of renewable energy going up strongly over the next decades, the rising demand for electricity, and consumers who are increasingly providing in their own energy supply, it is evident that smart grids will have an essential position in our future energy system.
The project was recognized as a solution listed in the Sustainia 100, a guide to creating sustainable societies using readily available solutions. Sustainia is an advocacy organization promoting the use of existing, available technologies for a sustainable global future. The listing was announced at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development held in Brazil in June.
The Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration project, which will kick off in September, will also involve modeling and testing the concept, but on a larger scale.
