The vehicle-to-grid concept is pretty familiar by now, but visitors to a Canadian auto show are getting a sneak peek at vehicle-to-home technology developed by Nissan. That's just one of the gee-whiz technologies we're highlighting in today's Discovery Showcase installment. Scroll down and click to page 2 for a look at OG&E's data fusion project, S&C Electric's wind farm challenge in the desert, a novel power-to-gas initiative in Germany and an intriguing solar solution for the agricultural industry
PowerStream and Nissan demonstrate V2H technology
Calling it the latest innovation in electric vehicle technology, Nissan Canada and Ontario-based electric distribution company PowerStream are showing how a fully or
partially charged battery in an EV can provide power to a home. The companies say the vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology developed by Nissan can help homeowners on time-of-use rates (who also own a Nissan Leaf) better manage their electricity costs through load shifting. It also provides a backup power source for their homes for up to four hours during an outage. The demonstration, which is taking place during an auto show, involves the use of a Nissan Leaf plugged into a power control system (PCS) that enables the car's battery to power lights, appliances and other devices in the home. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) allows for the home's electricity supply source to be switched from the power grid to the battery in the EV through the PCS. Read more about it >>
OG&E using data to reduce cost and improve efficiency of DR
Most people seem to agree that data analytics is the Next Big Thing for the smart
grid. But many are not quite sure what to analyze first. Here's an interesting answer from Oklahoma Gas & Electric: analyze your customers. Working with data fusion company GridGlo, OG&E is segmenting and analyzing its customers so it can more accurately -- and most cost efficiently -- target its demand response programs. GridGlo's analytics platform aggregates petabytes of data and quickly analyzes it by applying proprietary algorithms and advanced data fusion processes. The company says it is the first to leverage this approach to derive novel insights in the energy industry and to provide new ways for utilities to promote customer engagement. Read more about it >>
S&C solves grid integration challenges for Mojave wind farm
Connecting renewable energy plants to the electric grid is an important key to meeting clean energy goals, especially in California which has some of the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the country. But as S&C Electric knows from experience, there can also be challenges with renewable energy integration. Case in point is the company's recently completed procure-construct solution to expand capacity at the Coram Wind Farm in Mojave, Calif. As S&C explains it, the project posed significant technical challenges -- including integration of a 69-kV underground transmission line that required a high level of expertise and customization, building of two substations, and installation of 13 miles of 35-kV electrical cable, three miles of 69-kV underground cable and almost two miles of 69-kV overhead cable. S&C also faced a compressed installation schedule due to delays in receiving construction permits from local authorities. Despite the obstacles, S&C got the job done on time and the wind farm can now produce up to 102 MW. Read more about it >>
