Goldilocks would have approved this smart grid book. You remember when Goldilocks visited the house of the Three Bears, right? She had trouble getting her porridge, her chair and her borrowed bed just right.

 

But she would have approved of Mani Vadari's new book, Electric System Operations: Evolving to the Modern Grid. Some smart grid primers are too simplistic. Some are too complex. Electric System Operations is just right -- easy enough for beginners, but meaty enough for experienced personnel.

 

After beginning with a thorough introduction to power systems, the book covers all the many areas that affect power systems operations, including energy management systems, distribution management systems, outage management systems, and more.

 

In addition to providing a much-needed "primer for grown-ups," the book goes a step further. In most chapters, for instance, it explains the key components of that particular subsystem and goes on to predict future trends – useful, unbiased information for any utility bombarded by conflicting vendor claims.

 

Vadari holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He helped to pioneer the smart grid during executive-levels stints with Battelle Energy, Accenture and (the company now known as) Alstom Grid.

Excellent and Unique book on system operations and SG

The book provides excellent coverage for various areas of utilities business operations and associated technologies. The author has done a fantastic job of explaining the complex engineering topics from a business perspective and also providing sufficient technical details. The uniqueness of the book is that it explains the complex relationship between engineering side of the grid and the commercial aspects of the markets. The Chapter “Impact of Deregulation on System Operations” provides deep insight into system operations and markets; I have not seen any other book covering this crucial topic.
