Challenging Smart Grid misconceptions. Several readers have pointed to an article in TD World as a worthwhile read. Written by Joe Belechak, VP of Strategy for Westinghouse Electric Co., the article challenges several Smart Grid misconceptions. First, he points out the confusion of efficiency and demand response with renewables and distributed generation. He then documents how utilities have been progressive in adopting new technologies and business models. He argues that vendors often sell technology by looking for a problem instead of developing technology that solves existing problems. Finally, he stresses the need for a Smart Grid framework. QuickTake: Whether you agree or not, the article is worth reading as it asks the reader to think hard about these concepts and start using them correctly.

Sierra Energy, a division of Energy Central has issued a report highlighting the importance of the Federal Regulatory Council (FERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection program -- and of the $1M in penalties the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) can impose on those not implementing the CIP standards. The survey reveals many utilities had already adopted the standards in some form prior to NERC issuance. The August 2007 report costs $495.
