Consulting firm McKinsey & Company has released a report claiming that energy efficiency programs could cut U.S. energy use by 23%, saving $1.2 trillion by the year 2020. “Unlocking Energy Efficiency in the U.S. Economy" cited Smart Grid as a key program, along with sealing ducts, energy-efficient appliances, improved insulation and others. The catch? To achieve these gains would require an up-front investment of $520 billion, four or five times more than what is usually spent for efficiency. Quick Take: The savings could actually be much more, since the study did not consider transportation or place a value on reduced carbon emissions.
