A newly updated study by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) claims utilities can reduce carbon emissions and satisfy growing demand, while also limiting costs — but only if they aggressively deploy a “full portfolio” of technologies. The “Prism and Merge” analysis says the electric sector could reduce carbon emissions 41% relative to 2005 levels. The “full portfolio” includes carbon capture and storage, nuclear energy, renewable resources, plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs), increased efficiency through system improvements and programs to reduce customer demand. Quick Take: The called-for increases in wind, solar, nuclear, PHEVs, system upgrades and demand response would massively increase the need for the Smart Grid.
