It’s Time to Vote: Help Pick the 10 Smart Grid Companies to Watch in 2010
Jan 13, 2010
We’ve got 25 companies nominated by readers for inclusion in our 10 Smart Grid Companies to Watch in 2010.
And now it’s time to vote for the one company you think most deserves to be on the list. The 10 companies that get the most votes will be … as promised … on our radar (if they aren’t already) as we monitor Smart Grid progress in the year ahead.
In case you’re coming to this late in the game, here’s how we got to this point: Readers nominated companies they think have the potential to be Smart Grid superstars this year. Our team reviewed all the nominations we received and did a preliminary sort. For the past week we’ve been briefly highlighting the 25 companies you see on the ballot. If you want to take another look at those highlights, we’ve linked the articles here:

REGEN Energy
In our view, it will be very difficult to implement Smart Grid in the traditional centralized command and control paradigm. There is not the computer processing power, nor the network bandwidth to support this type of control. It is necessary to have subsystems autonomously operate and only report on an exception basis, or be communicated with if a change in operational strategy is required. Swarm logic is the perfect strategy to implement this type of control...a group of intelligent peers communicating with each other to determine how best to optimize the control of whatever they are attached to.

SmartSynch
SmartSynch is fostering an ecosystem of collaboration and innovation with its GridRouter device--making it a top company to watch in 2010. Interoperability among smart grid solutions and “future-proofing” the grid has always been an issue – until now.
SmartSynch's GridRouter (www.gridrouter.com) is the first communications platform that allows any utility device to communicate over any network (public or private) using any software application that supports IP connectivity. The GridRouter is also remotely upgradable so as technology and the smart grid evolve, this product will, too.

Viridity or bust...
My money is on Viridity for a variety of reasons. Predominantly, the incentives they provide to customers in the form of monetizing their savings. There is reward built into the system, which is vital in this day and age to increase conscientiousness about energy use. Furthermore, their experience in grid technology bodes well for future success in the demand response/smart-grid world.

Ambient
Look at their partners Itron,Verizon, and contracts with Duke to build out Ohio with Indiana in the wings.
We're getting mixed signals about the vitality of the smart grid market. On the one hand, the recent DistribuTECH conference was one of the most successful ever. On the other, a well-known Wall Street analyst recently told his clients that the smart metering sector is "facing several headwinds," including weak regulatory support in the U.S. and delays in European adoption. Taking the pulse of the smart grid industry is this week's Tuesday Topic.
