Southern California Edison (SCE) is the largest electric utility in California, serving more than 13 million people in more than 180 cities.

 

It serves a 50,000- square-mile area of central, coastal and Southern California, excluding the City of Los Angeles and certain other cities. Based in Rosemead, CA, the utility has been providing electric service in the region for more than 120 years.

 

The utility’s attempts to bring power to the masses prompts protest – from rural residents preferring transmission lines over range lands rather than farmlands to city dwellers rallying against extra-high towers and power lines through densely populated neighborhoods and near schools, not to mention earthquake fault lines.

 

Smart Grid

SCE began deploying smart meters in 2001 and is a clear leader among utilities pursuing Smart Grid technologies and solutions. It is implementing its own Edison SmartConnect program, touted as “the nation's most advanced smart metering system.” In late 2008 it won CPUC approval to install over 5 million AMI devices at residences and small businesses.

 

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved $1.63 billion in funding for the SCE smart metering program, Edison SmartConnect. In 2005, SCE began the application process with the CPUC for its smart metering program. In summer of 2007, SCE submitted an application to allow authorization of $1.63 billion from ratepayers to fund the third and final execution phase of the program. SCE will install 5.3 million new smart meters for its residential and small-business customers through 2012.

 

Renewables

 

In May 2009, SCE was seeking approval to purchase 90 MW of power from an Idaho wind farm. If approved, construction would begin in 2010.

 

California regulators are considering a proposal for a large-scale solar plant in the desert near Barstow that would generate 850 MW of electricity through 34,000 solar dishes. If built, SCE says it will purchase the plant’s output.

 

For vendors only …

 

SCE is so advanced and has such a large staff that their own efforts can often dwarf the contributions from a supplier.
