While the home energy management sector has created a very crowded and competitive market, utilities planning pilot programs face a confusing array of technologies and options. And, according to a report from IDC Energy Insights, those technologies aren't really ready to meet expectations.

 

The IDC report says many utilities are somewhere on the road to pilots in areas such as demand response, load control, energy efficiency and customer education – and that all could involve home energy management. But utilities should tread lightly and carefully, IDC says: the technology isn't ready; technology options aren't clear to utility professionals; and many communications standards are still in the development phase.

 

"Technology selection and deployment options are very confusing at this time," said Usman Sindhu, IDC senior research analyst in utilities, oil and gas. "Utilities are in need of clear choices and tangible approaches to enable home energy management. Unfortunately, the market is not going to get better any time soon. Therefore, utility professionals, especially energy management and IT folks, have to team up in selecting the right technology and business model."
