Boulder, the site of the well-publicized SmartGridCity demonstration project, will convert five of the city's hybrid vehicles into plug-in hybrid (PHEVs) and sell the electricity stored in their batteries back to the utility company. SmartGridCity developer Xcel Energy will foot the bill for the spendy conversions with a $55,000 grant. . . Quick Take: At some point in the future, Xcel wants to have as many as 500 PHEVs plugged into the grid. A larger scale deployment would be worth watching for a lot of reasons once the technology is ready for prime time.
