Had to Happen: Windy City Gets First All Wind-Powered EV Charging Station

If EVs are coming to help rescue the environment and cut the use of fossil fuels, shouldn't the way we charge them do the same?

Billed as the first truly green EV charging station in the U.S., an all wind-powered station has been installed in Chicago's Highland Park. And of course, it's for a law firm that specializes in Smart Grid, renewable energy and energy law.

The law firm, Emalfarb, Swan & Bain also gets wind-powered renewable energy credits from MC Squared Energy Services, a Chicago-based retail electricity provider, for its building.

Partner Hal Emalfarb drives a hybrid Prius converted to all-electric power. "By integrating renewable energy, in this case, the prairie winds of Illinois, to power our office and our cars, we have seamlessly accomplished the goal of a cleaner grid that leads to a reduction of greenhouse gases. Smart Grid technology will explode with green jobs and local investment in the upcoming 'Recovery through Retrofit' initiative announced by Vice President Biden's Middle Class Task Force."

The firm works to help its clients get into the energy efficiency marketplace and to guide them in tailoring their products and services to generate sustainable jobs.

The station was installed by Carbon Day Automotive and is powered by Coulomb Technologies' ChargePoint® Network.

While the Highland Park station is said to the be the first wind-powered charging station in the world, it isn't the only one in Chicago powered by renewable energy. Carbon Day also installed a charging station that features a specially-designed solar canopy for Chicago's Department of Fleet Maintenance.
