EVs and Batteries Get a Jumpstart: Nissan Breaks Ground on New Manufacturing Plant

Nissan broke ground recently for its Smyrna, Tennessee, electric vehicle (EV) and advanced EV battery manufacturing plant. A $1.4 billion DOE loan closed earlier this year will allow Nissan to retool its existing Smyrna plant to build its LEAF EVs (pictured here) and the advanced battery packs to power them. The automaker plans to build up to 150,000 EVs and 200,000 battery packs annually. Nissan also is working with state and local governments and electric utilities to pave the way for EVs to enter the market, including the installation of EV charging stations.

Quick Take: Fortunately, Nissan's strategy takes the long view: Not only are they building EVs and batteries, they're contributing to the charging infrastructure needed to support them as they enter the market.
