OnStar, a GM subsidiary, is offering APIs that concentrate on solutions the company has recently developed, including:
Demand response: The solution connects utilities to companies with intelligent energy management products, which can use OnStar to manage energy use for Volt drivers who choose the service. The service would allow customers to save on energy costs and allow for more efficient use of the grid.
Time-of-use rates (TOU): OnStar can get TOU pricing from utilities and notify car owners via email. Owners will be able to use OnStar to load the rate plans into their vehicles to charge their EVs when rates are lower.
Charging data: The company can provide utilities with EV information including location-based data that identifies charging locations and determines potential load scenarios.
Aggregated services: With customers consent, this solution allows electric service providers to manage charging of participating EVs in a specific geographic area, and to control charging on a large number of vehicles simultaneously.
Nick Pudar, VP of OnStar planning and business development, said the Volt is smart grid-ready, and added "Now we need utilities and other companies to take the steps necessary to make smart grid solutions a reality for Volt owners."
OnStar's services are provided through its Advanced Telematics Operating Management System, a cloud-based platform.
