Quick Take: As the MIT Technology Review points out, other companies are making chargers for electric vehicles. But the ability to easily integrate GE smart chargers with the rest of GE’s Smart Grid portfolio could provide a significant advantage given that GE products pretty much run the grid gamut from the power plant to the home. The key, of course, will be the software that can manage all of the complex interrelationships.

Just as we were eyeballing a new electric vehicle report from SBI Energy suggesting success of the EV market will require EV infrastructure manufacturers to step up comes word that GE is doing just that. This spring GE’s Smart Grid offerings will expand with a line of EV smart charging stations.

Smart Chargers

The software will indeed be everything when it comes to chargers, but that still leaves many important details to be worked out. One of the most important is the way in which electricity for EV charging will be priced and sold. TOU rates are one way, but they tend not to reflect day-to-day system conditions and at high EV penetration levels, could actually make worse some of the operational problems (too much off-peak generation chasing too little load) EVs are supposed to fix. Another is to have EVs purchase electricity under dynamic retail prices that are directly linked to the wholesale market. In this way, smart EV chargers could search for, efficiently make use of and add value to available surplus off-peak electric supply.
