Advanced battery systems: A new generation of batteries characterized by improved efficiency and power, as well as fast charging.
AFV: Alternate fuel vehicle.
Ah: Amp hour, a unit of electrical energy.
BEV: Battery electric vehicle.
Capacity: The measurement of an amount of energy a battery can provide in one discharge.
Charge coupler: A connector and vehicle receptacle for hybrid and electric vehicle charging.
Cycle life: The useful lifespan of a rechargeable battery before it begins to lose its ability to hold a charge.
Ebike: Electric bicycle.
Energy density: The amount of energy in a fuel source, such as lead acid and lithium-ion batteries.
EV: Electric vehicle operating exclusively on electric power. BEV.
EV charging station: The facility that provides battery charging for EVs. Many new installations provide electricity from wind and solar sources.
Full hybrid: A hybrid electric vehicle capable of running on battery power only.
GHGs: Greenhouse gas emissions.
HEV: Hybrid electric vehicle with two or more sources of power, with one source electric.
Lithium-ion battery: A popular lightweight, high capacity battery. Different versions have differing chemistries, but they're found in everything from EVs to cell phones.
Mild hybrid: An HEV in which the electric motor requires an additional source of power, such as a gasoline engine.
nEV: Neighborhood EV, for short hops.
PHEV: Plug-in hybrid EV.
Regenerative braking: Electricity can be generated by most electric motors. In this instance, it is energy captured and stored as drivers use their EV's brakes.
Secondary use: The use of PHEV and EV batteries for stationary electric grid storage after they can no longer meet the demands of charging vehicles.
V2G: Vehicle to grid; the integration of EVs with the Smart Grid. ZEV: Zero emissions vehicle.
