Smart energy solutions provider GridPoint has won a three-year contract to install its advanced monitoring and control systems in up to 2,250 U.S. Postal Service locations throughout the country. GridPoint's work will contribute to the USPS goal of cutting its facility energy consumption 30% by 2015. The contract calls for GridPoint's advanced submetering and energy management systems to be installed in up to 750 locations during the first year, with an option for two one-year extensions to install the systems in 750 locations each year. GridPoint says the benefits include reduced energy costs, increased efficiency and the adoption of clean technologies.

Quick Take: It may surprise some readers to learn that the USPS has been aggressive about energy conservation for several years, and the GridPoint contract takes it to the next level. The postal service also is testing EVs, HEVs — and even a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle — in its fleet.
