Facebook, Meet the Smart Grid: Social Media-Style Web Site Encourages Energy Efficiency By SGN Staff Apr 22, 2010 - 12:42:30 PM
A free Web application designed to allow consumers track and reduce their energy consumption has been packaged into a social network and launched by a Caribbean energy consultant. Welectricity provides consumers with energy use information, feedback, goal-setting and a little social pressure to encourage energy efficiency. Users sign up, set up profiles, invite and interact with friends and can compare their energy use with others. The consultant who developed the application says no smart meters or in-home energy management equipment is necessary. The site was launched to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Quick Take: We haven't had a chance to see how well this novel Web app works, but it’s certainly a reasonable concept. There's nothing wrong with bringing a little fun (and peer pressure) to energy efficiency efforts.
