An Easy Way to Manage Energy Use? Zerofootprint Suggests TalkingPlug By SGN Staff Nov 19, 2009 - 2:49:34 PM
Zerofootprint has developed the TalkingPlug™, an easy-to-use stand-alone device that both industry and residential consumers can install to better manage their energy consumption. The device contains the capability of two-way communications with the Internet and offers users a convenient way to determine how much electricity individual appliances use.
Developed in conjunction with 2D2C, the TalkingPlug also allows users to automatically or remotely turn off appliances. It works independently or in conjunction with existing monitoring technology. In other words, it works with our without any other Smart Grid technologies—and unlike existing smart meters and other similar devices, circuits do not need to be rewired or appliances upgraded. Users insert the TalkingPlug into a standard receptacle, give it some information about the appliance to be monitored and that's it.
The TalkingPlug electrical outlets contain energy measurement instruments, on/off relays, appliance identification tags and wireless networking technology. They also act as wireless communication nodes on a building energy network. The nodes constantly send appliance-specific energy consumption information to a local gateway for collection and storage.
"As we move towards a world in which every plug and every light switch talks to the Internet, and carbon monitoring comes as naturally as breathing, we are witnessing a major cultural shift," said Dr. Ron Dembo, founder and CEO of Zerofootprint. "TalkingPlug is taking environmental consciousness to a new level, by making it easy—through software intelligence and automation, and making it real—with benchmarking and comparisons."
Zerofootprint's VELOpulse™ interface displays the data with graphical meters and shows trends and reports on how energy consumption compares to others. The Web-based software also can analyze, compare and display the energy consumption information.
The company is working with utilities, appliance makers and technology resellers to bring its product to market globally and to consumers.
Quick Take: We're cautiously optimistic that products like this one will help consumers understand the overall benefits of the Smart Grid. It's no harder to install than plugging in a toaster and provides enough information for consumers to take an active role in managing their energy use, and its cost.
