So Con Edison is teaming with ThinkEco to encourage NYC apartment building owners and tenants to create smarter AC via "modlets." Con Edison describes modlets as simple plug-in smart outlets that can be controlled by a smart A/C thermostat and a user’s online modlet account. The package allows users to turn on/off or adjust the temperature on their units remotely via smartphone or web browser.
Residential customers participating in the "coolNYC" program receive a modlet smartA/C kit, which includes the modlet, a remote-control thermostat and access to a web-based application. .
Con Edison estimates the energy savings from the program which is targeting 10,000 NYC air conditioners will result in five megawatts of demand reduction, enough power for 5,000 homes. .
“Con Edison continues to increase engagement with our customers by introducing new technologies that help them save energy, save money, and protect the environment,” said Rebecca Craft, Director of Energy Efficiency Programs of Con Edison. “Our work with ThinkEco is forging a new way to help reduce the energy waste associated with window air conditioners, while keeping city residents comfortable during heat waves.”
