Watch energy innovators in action…
Speaking of appliances …
The Department of Energy this week announced new energy efficiency standards for residential clothes washers and dishwashers that it says will save consumers $20 billion in energy and water costs. “Working with consumer, industry and environmental groups to develop common-sense energy-saving appliance standards is an important part of the Obama Administration’s all-of-the-above approach to American energy and the Energy Department’s efforts to reduce energy costs for consumers,” said Secretary Chu. “Collectively, these energy efficiency standards for everyday appliances have saved American families hundreds of billions of dollars and offered consumers more efficient, less costly appliances without sacrificing performance.” Learn more >>
From the department of good reads….
· In a post on the Pike Research blog titled The Feminine Cleantech Mystique, Dexter Gauntlett takes a look at the important role women have played and continue to play in cleantech, both private and public sectors. You'll see names you know, and some you may not know but may want to know.
· We also liked Renewable Energy World's piece, Five Shining Examples of Renewable Energy Innovation and Investment, as a reminder that while the sector may be going through a bit of a rough patch right now, there's some fascinating research underway – from exploring abandoned mines for geothermal energy to the potential of black biomass pellets as a replacement for coal.
· This one isn't so much a good read, but a sobering one certainly. The Texas Tribune reports that the Rio Grande River near El Paso has run dry -- removing a key source of water for the city. The situation has forced El Paso Water Utilities to ask its customers to restrict water usage and it is searching for alternative sources. We recently wrote about the hyper-critical energy-water nexus in our new Smart Water channel – here's more evidence of a crisis at hand.
