One notable Elster smart grid achievement beyond its metering successes was its initial public offering in the fall of 2010 on the New York Stock Exchange, perhaps offering encouragement for other smart grid "pure play" companies looking to go public. A German-based meter maker with a long history, Elster smart grid research and manufacturing operations in the U.S. are in Raleigh, N.C.
The company has made it clear it intends to be a solution provider, not a product company. Elster smart grid solutions include a triple play – smart meters for electricity, gas and water – a differentiator for utilities who want to go with a single metering source. Demand response technologies and management solutions are also part of the Elster smart grid portfolio.
