Smart Grid technology companies Viridity Energy and EDSA will demonstrate the integration of onsite renewable energy production into the microgrid that provides most of the elecricity for UC San Diego's 1,200 acre campus For the project, called Renewable Energy Secure Communities (RESCO), EDSA and Viridity will combine their software solutions to give the university microgrid an optimized power system and optimized energy market response capabilities. The intent is to ensure reliability and energy and cost efficiency for the advanced microgrid. The campus gets roughly 82% of its power from two gas turbines, a steam turbine and a solar cell installation.
Quick Take: Assuming everything works as planned, this project — which also will optimize the microgrid's energy storage capabilities — will be a leap forward in Smart Grid technologies that can be used by other large operations, like cities and universities, that both produce and consume large amounts of electricity.
