Smart Grids and Smart Highways Go Together Like Synchrophasors and Solar

Smart Grid technology innovator Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) will help maintain power quality and reliability for an Oregon solar highway project with its synchrophasor protection and measurement technology. The landmark Oregon Solar highway project, managed by Sandia National Laboratories and funded by the Solar America Initiative, is intended to pave the way for larger solar highway installations. Solar energy provides roughly a third of the power required to light the busy I-5/I-205 interchange in Tualatin, Oregon. The inclusion of SEL's new synchrophasor-based islanding detection system will allow operators to better monitor and prevent unintentional power islanding. The project also focuses on integrating intermittent solar power into the primary grid.

Quick Take: This high-powered partnership deserves to be congratulated for making significant progress on the challenges of managing the Smart Grid and effectively harnessing the unpredictable energy sources that help power it.
