1 FERC is asking for public comments on a recently conducted study of the tools needed to ensure electric grid reliability. The study, run by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and funded by FERC's Office of Electric Reliability, focuses on a number of issues, including
· Frequency response of the bulk power system, or how the system performs when confronted with sudden loss of power generation that could lead to problems like blackouts
· Reliability impacts of different power source mixes, including renewables
· Operating and planning the transmission system
· Designing markets to integrate and operate future generation and transmission resources
· Identifying and deploying technologies such as demand response and energy storage in conjunction with renewables generation
"This study is valuable in that it gives us the tools to help determine how to manage operation and expansion of the grid, regardless of which resources the electric industry uses to generate power," said FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff. Comments are due by March 5, 2011.
Quick Take: The study addresses a number of critical smart grid issues, and this is an opportunity to share your views in a meaningful way.
